"the weight of the world" was written by Jackson Vincent in response to the bitter and spiteful ending of a long-term friendship that always held the potential of being something more. After years of dancing around the idea of romantic involvement, the bond was broken entirely and left nothing in its place except for the lingering feeling of "right person, wrong time."
lyrics
Give me one good reason why I should never leave
I cannot think of a single thing you've ever done for me
And you told all of your friends that night how I was just a pawn
In a twisted game of chess that you'd been playing along
You said "We're both in situations keeping us from what we want"
But that was such a lie because you had no clue at all
You get me drunk so when you say these things I cannot comprehend
And when I'm sober claim you said it once and you won't say it again
Was your hair always this red or did you color it yourself
To prove a point to your old man that you've escaped his household hell?
And your mother is looking down on you with tears in angel eyes
'Cause now you're the same age that she was when she missed saying goodbye
And I know you're going through a lot but trust me I am too
Ain't it funny how I never took my problems out on you?
We're different people in the end, I guess I'm glad you're having fun
I've realized I'm so much happier now you're really gone
